EXEMPTION CHECKLIST A research project involving human subjects may be granted an exemption from IRB review if all of the project’s human subjects research falls within one or more of the exemption categories defined by government regulations [45 CFR 46.101]. This checklist will help you determine whether your project may qualify for an exemption. If you think your project qualifies, submit this checklist with an Application for Exemption (see links under Forms) to the HIRB. IMPORTANT: Research that qualifies for exemption may not be undertaken until the HIRB issues an exemption. Final decisions about qualification for exemption rest with the HIRB.
