The Johns Hopkins University is committed to protecting the rights and welfare of individuals participating as subjects in research.  All human subjects research conducted under the auspices of the University is evaluated by one or more Institutional Review Boards (IRBs).

The IRBs are charged with the responsibility for reviewing, approving the initiation of, and conducting periodic review of human subjects research conducted by Hopkins faculty, students, and staff. The primary purpose of the IRBs is to ensure that the rights and welfare of subjects are protected.

The Homewood Institutional Review Board is the IRB serving the University’s Krieger School of Arts and Sciences, Whiting School of Engineering, School of Professional Studies in Business and Education, School of Advanced International Studies, Peabody Institute, and Applied Physics Laboratory (for behavioral and social sciences research).

Faculty, staff, and students must submit for review any human subjects research project, regardless of funding source (or lack of funding) and regardless of the location at which the research will be conducted.

The Homewood IRB works with the Johns Hopkins Medicine IRBs and the Committee on Human Research in the Bloomberg School of Public Health.  Human subjects research projects involving clinical investigations are referred to the Hopkins Medicine IRBs, which have the expertise to evaluate clinical studies.
