Problem sets
Problem set 1 Due at the beginning of class, Thursday 2/14
Problem set 2: Problems (1)-(4) at the end of K&K, Ch.3. Due at the beginning of class, Thursday 2/21
Assignment 3: Measure your vowel formants. See instructions at the end of the slides for 3/13. The last page (front and back) of the handout for 3/13 has a compilation of vowel duration and formant measurements from men, women, and children; see especially Table V on the page numbered 3103. This information may be helpful in determining whether your measurements are within the expected range (but don't worry if after working on them for a while they still deviate from the published data). Due ideally before Tuesday 3/25.
Assignment 4: VOT measurements. See instructions at the end of the slides for 3/25. One of the handouts for 3/25 (marked `Scarborough' at the top) contains a brief description of VOT; we are interested in `lag VOTs' only for this assignment. Due Tuesday 4/01.
Assignment 5: Questions (not definitions) at end of Johnson, Ch. 2 (all), Ch. 3 (questions 1-3 only), Ch. 5 (2-4 only). Don't answer any question that requires you to work with a partner or venture out into an open yard or field. Due Thursday 4/10.
Problem set 6: Exercises 1, 2, and 4 of K&K, Ch.7, pp. 286-288. For exercise 1, do not answer the question "What bearing does your analysis have on the transparency principle concerning syllable structure", since we never discussed the transparency principle (whatever that is). Due anytime the week of 4/22 (including Saturday and Sunday).
